I am trying to get a FreeNAS server running on a HP DL380 G5 using a USB flash drive for the freenas-os pool.

I have tried 3 different flash drives I had on hand and each time I end up with errors in the on-screen logs, unresponsive web UI, and inability to do anything on the server.

The drives I have tried are a Toshiba, San Disk Cruzer and Lexar.

What should I be buying?

I have few of those and always had problems boot from an USB, even to install OS to the disks. I've used an adapter to replace the DVD with a SSD and installed there. It worked like a charm.

Thanks - I did wonder about replacing the DVD but didn't recognise the cable / connector. I'll investigate.

Just checked the HP DL380 G7 at work and it does have the slim SATA as you described. I need a solution for the G5

Can I run a PCIe-x SATA controller in the HP G5? Are there chipsets I should be looking for that are compatible with FreeBSD?
