Hi,

I know that this is NOT an recommended setup in any way (But will it work?).
I got the following hardware.
Intel NUC NUC6I5SYH (With 32GB of ram).
I got two external USB 3.0 HDD with 3TB each.

I have installed Proxmox on the NUC.
I have installed FreeNAS as an VM.

I have configuered both of the HDD as "passthrough" to the FreeNAS.
Code:
cat /etc/pve/qemu-server/114.conf
bootdisk: virtio0
cores: 2
cpu: host
keyboard: us
memory: 8192
name: freenas
net0: virtio=D2:DD:E6:2B:xx:xx,bridge=vmbr0
numa: 0
onboot: 1
ostype: other
scsihw: virtio-scsi-pci
smbios1: uuid=4cb4d050-c894-4b32-a937-26bcd139d672
sockets: 1
virtio0: Data-Storage:vm-114-disk-1,size=16G
virtio1: /dev/disk/by-id/usb-WD_My_Passport_25E2_5758313.....50-0:0,size=2861556M
virtio2: /dev/disk/by-id/usb-WD_My_Passport_25E2_5758333.....-0:0,size=2861556M

FreeNAS is booted normally and I have setup both disks as a mirror.
So far everything looks good! I get around 80-100MB/sec throughput on the disks.

So is this an setup that I can "trust"? The NUC of course does not have ECC ram.
Also what also makes my setup unusual is the external USB disks.

Or should choose mediavault instead for an setup like this?
One of the reasons why I did choose to try this setup is that I do now have room/space for having an NAS in my apartment at home. I also need something that does not make and noise.
So the NUC and external disks are perfect for this.

Thanks for any suggestions or warnings :)

/Joe

It may work, but I would only use it for throwaway data and don't "trust" it for the reasons you mentioned:
-no ecc
-USB disks

Thanks for your answer snaptec.
Yes, but even if this is an setup I can't "trust".. What's a worst case scenario here? Could I loose all the data?
And should I turn off scrub?

+1 to anodos
It must not, but I won't be surprised if you loose data.

Advice is: do not proceed.
If this is the hardware you are looking to use, look for another solution than FreeNAS.

Good luck.

Hi Dice,

Thanks for your reply.
When you say "do not proceed" is that because the NUC does not have ECC ram, or because of the external usb disks?
Or do you have expirence with the same setup?
I have already considered mediavault for the same task. But I do like FreeNas better and also the community seems a lot better

Thanks

Either follow recommendations soundly to minimize problems relating to inadequate hardware or be on your own and ....don't expect assistance.

Your suggested build definitely qualifies to the hall of fail - thread.

I'm used to being on my own in my "homelab".
I know that this setup is not recommended in any way, but the main reason for opening this thread was to see if any other people got any experience on a similar setup.
For now I think I will test this setup.

Thanks for all your warnings anyway.
