Intel NUC with external USB Storage

Hi there,
I am planing to replace my synology NAS with FreeNAS. QS: Will a Intel NUC with an external USB Storage Box (e.x. RaidSonic Icy Box IB-3740-C31) work (reliably)? Those 4 HDDs can be used independently but I am not sure if the performance and stability would be good enough.
I am planing to use 2 x RAID1 with full disk encryption.
