I am trying to setup a new FreeNAS 8.3 server. I have a 1TB disk and would like to have shared network storage for a Windows PC and a Mac as well as a Time Machine backup for the Mac. I thought I would create 2 partitions on the disk to keep these things separate. Also, my understanding is that Time Machine will use up available space, so I was worried it would (eventually) take much of the hard drive, so I thought I would limit it.
After a bit of searching, it's clear that the GUI doesn't allow me to create multiple partitions. I do see, however, that there is a shell interface. I found this page about how to create multiple partitions/slices and created 2 partitions.

When I go to import volumes, I initially see both partitions. However, after I import the first one, the second one doesn't show up. I also tried to create slices instead of partitions (I don't quite understand the difference), but that didn't make any difference.

This thread seems to describe the same problem, but the person got it working by importing their 8.0 settings. Unfortunately, I am doing a new install, so I have no settings to import.

Also, when I first plugged in the disk, I had FreeNAS import and format the disk as UFS. When I looked at it in the shell, I saw that there were 2 partitions (or slices?). One was 2GB and was labeled something like freebsd_swap. The other was the rest of the disk. Do I need this partition?

I understand ZFS would make this issue go away, but I only have 1 hard drive, and my understanding is that I should have at least 3 for ZFS. Plus this is just a small home NAS for a few users.

Any suggestions?
Matt
