Hi all I am currently looking at parts for freenas setup. I am leaning towards a supermicro x10 board. I was checking out ram on craigslist and noticed a guy had some IBM ram that he tagged as samsung. I tried to verify it but couldn't find anything. I did a few searches online and on the forum can anyone confirm this may work? They are new and unused and have been sitting in the package for however long. The ram is

5 8 GB Sticks

PC3-8500-07-10-H0-D2

If these will work with the supermicro motherboards I would like to grab it, his price is pretty good.

Thanks
Jared

Unlikely. I am 98% sure that module is "registered" RAM. You want unregistered/unbuffered RAM for any of the usual X10 boards from Supermicro.

Do you have the IBM part numbers for the memory? My x10 board uses Unbuffered (UDIMM) DDR3 (PC3) memory. Some x10 boards use DDR4 memory. My x9 and x8 boards use registered memory. The memory I use in the x8 and x9 motherboards happens to be old IBM memory. If we know the specific memory and motherboard part numbers you are looking at, we can better help you choose your components.

I don't buy used RAM because of being burned twice by bad modules.
If you buy through eBay, eBay will force the seller to take it back if you file a claim, even if the seller has a no-return policy. I bought 128GB of memory, 64 each for two servers, and none of it worked because it was not the correct kind, bad description in the listing. The seller wanted me to pay shipping to send it back and charge me a restocking fee but eBay forced them to not only pay the shipping to send it back, but also give me a 100% refund of the purchase price and the amount I originally paid for shipping. The buyer protection on eBay is beyond reproach and there is no reason to not buy used gear through eBay. The seller is actually the one taking the risk.

Are you going to respond to any of the questions here?

I have a suggestion. Get some used gear instead of buying new. How about this:

I just suggested something like this to someone else a couple weeks ago, but I couldn't find the post to point you at. Here is what I would suggest for a tower build that you want quiet and inexpensive while still capable.

CASE: Fractal-Design-Define-R5-FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK-Black-Silent-ATX-Midtower-Computer-Case - US $99.99
https://www.ebay.com/itm/263674323506

Sorry all for the delayed reply. I had a few things come up between when I asked the question initially and today. I was researching some of the replies while I wasn't responding.

I thought the item number was in my original post, that is what I used when I was looking around for info, please correct me if I am wrong. PC3-8500-07-10-H0-D2

What I'm running. Price fluctuates a lot, was $250 when I bought mine. I don't buy used RAM because of being burned twice by bad modules. Make sure you run memtest or equivalent before going live with your build.

Edit: I lied to you, it's actually the "I" variant

Didnt the FAQ for ram selection recommend strongly to stay away from this kingston?

I think so as well but some people have reported success, I am going for a sure thing though so I'll shy away.

Thanks sir, that covers just about everything I was already looking at. A couple of caveats you or someone may be able to help me with. I have a couple of 12 bay server rack cases I grabbed locally. They have a sata 2 backplane, is that something I should look at upgrading? I'll probably only grab 8 drives initially because that will cover my needs for now. I'll need a power supply so I will grab that when I am getting everything else.

Thanks all
Jared

You know how most memory is listed as 16000 MHz (or something like that) this memory is a very old model that runs at 1066 MHz. Probably too slow for a semi-modern computer to even pass POST. Don't buy it.

What size drives are you looking for?

If the backplanes have SATA connectors, you can cable to them with the SAS to SATA breakout cables I linked to.
If you want more drives later, you can add a SAS expander to connect more drives to the existing SAS controller:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-IBM-46...ion-Adapter-16-Port-SAS-Expander/132448152088
You can run up to 256 drives from a single SAS controller.

I'll grab the parts soon and play with some drives I already have. Around holiday sale time I'll jump on the best $ per GB I can find. I think it's at the 6 GB mark now, but havent researched much yet, WD red.

I have never touched a server case so I am trying to pick up terms and learn while asking questions, but the forum is excellent and full of info so I'll get there soon.

That is one of the chassis types that has a separate backplane for each horizontal row of drives and some of them are missing. That will ruin it for being able to hot-swap, unless you can find backplanes that will fit the case. Do you have a brand for the chassis?

Those are all the markings on it.

Keep a lookout on eBay as occasionally there are good deals to be had. Yesterday, I came cross someone selling a two 8GB DDR3 UDIMMs for $69 for the PAIR. There are a number of deals out there but be sure to get 8GB in a single UDIMM and make sure the memory is ECC.

If you are still looking for a system for FreeNAS I have 3 available and will be selling at least one of them in the near future. One has an X10 motherboard with 16GB of RAM, 600+w power supply, and 10 removable disk bays in a mid-tower.
