After much deliberation I decided that I need to move from my oldy trusy windows XP box with attached USB drives and Windows shares, to FreeNAS.

Also after much deliberation I have on order a HP PROLIANT N36L MICROSERVER

The server comes with 1GB memory, and I'm wondering if I need to upgrade this from day 1?

I intend to run freenas from a USB pen drive, and it will be serving out blu-ray movies to a couple of media players in the house.

Im not intending to use RAID at all.

Will the standard 1GB memory be enough, or should I order an upgrade?

More. 1GB is the bare minimum of FreeNAS functionality even without using ZFS. You will not get the speeds you want. Search around the forums for other threads about FreeNAS performance tuning.

Thanks. After having a read up, I decided I might as well throw 8GB of ECC into it. No plans for any kind of raid at the moment, but performance is important so hopefully this will do the trick.

i'd very much recommend both 8GB memory AND use of zfs for managing disks.

Ive ordered the 8GB.... but not sure about ZFS. The drives Im going to use are current NTFS drives...is it possible to convert them in freenas, or am I going to have to wipe the drives?
