I'm looking forward to learning more about FreeNAS. Been reading for the last couple of weeks as I develop my plan of attack.

I will be setting up a FreeNAS system for the first time over the next week or so. This will replace a couple of Sans Digital RAID5 enclosures purchased about 7 years ago from Newegg filled with 1TB Ultrastar HDs. They use a cheapo SATA port multiplier and I took them offline a couple of years ago because I didn't trust them and moved my data to a cloud backup system (and multiple portable drives scattered throughout the region)...

I have about 200G of personally critical images and documents that I want to access from laptops and another desktop via file shares.

My plan is to have my system use seven of the previously mentioned 1TB Ultrastar HDs in RAIDZ3 (leaving me 3 matching drives in case of failures). Reusing an old tower PC with the following:
  • Intel Quad Core motherboard with 8Gb non-ECC RAM (sourcing ECC RAM now)
  • 4-port SATA card
  • 700W PS
  • A pair of 16G Sandisk cruzers to be mirrored for the OS
Things I'm hoping to do:
  1. Get this thing running ;)
  2. Get a UPS
  3. Use the last SATA port to attach eSATA drives for offsite backup
  4. Create "Time Machine" backup system for my wife's macbook
  5. Have fun learning something new
Cheers!
