Hi everyone.

I live in Fort Collins, CO and work as a consultant. I am currently helping a company implement new security policies which include a need for a ZFS based file share. I bought an iXSystems miniXL and I'm running FreeNAS 11.1 on it. It's my first introduction to the operating system.

I've been running OpenZFSonOSX for about a year and I love it. Now it's time to build out a larger storage system.

We were all very disappointed when Apple decided not to go ZFS on OSX.

Be sure to read lots of documentation. There's a lot to know about ZFS and performance, and it is important to make good decisions if you want a nicely performing ZFS system. In particular, make sure you characterize your storage needs. ZFS use cases basically go one of two ways: smaller file/block/database storage, where mirror vdevs are the way to go, and large file, archival, infrequently written backups, where RAIDZ2 or Z3 are good choices. Make sure that you leave plenty of free space especially if you want good write speeds. There's a lot of great folks here who will help you out.
