Hi all,

I have an 8.3.0 install i've been happy with. I've got two disks in zfs mode as one volume. Yesterday i tried in a desperate attempt to remove any permission issues, to detach the volume. Without erasing the content, i thought i could auto-Import the volume again. But alas, when i try auto-import, all i see is a blank drop-down curtain to select volumes. Can someone help me point out a way to restore my volume? Can i upgrade the freenas to find the volume again?

As you can understand, i'm quite desperate here.

Post the output of zpool status and zpool import, and gpart show. Encase it in CODE tags so that the formatting is preserved.

And don't do anything else! People come up with some "great" idea(read: incredibly stupid) and it costs them their data.

Strange, zpool ststus now reads:

Code:

With the last command (zpool status) shows that your pool is already imported.

Try "zpool import -R /mnt/X X" and see if it mounts. This will temporarily break FreeNAS' GUI, but if you go to /mnt/X and look at your directory listing you should see your files.

On the other hand, if FreeNAS panics, well, you're having a bad day.

Doh, posted and then saw the new posts. Yeah, your pool is mounted. So are you trying to mount a pool that's already mounted?

Thank you for helping me out. I'm not at home now, but are you saying that the volume should now be ready for use. The manual says "If an existing ZFS pool does not show in the drop-down menu, run zpool import from Shell to import the pool." I read this as having to run zpoll import and then it would show in the dropdown.
So you're saying I will find the volume in my list of volumes now? That the zpool import does the same as auto-import.

Thanks again

zpool import will tell you what pools you have available that are not mounted.

zpool status shows you what pools are already mounted.

With that in mind and if you read your last post, your pool is already mounted. So trying to mount the pool isn't necessary since its already mounted. You shouldn't have to run any CLI commands to get the GUI to function. The GUI will function properly on its own.

Sorry to revive again. It seems my volume is caught between a rock and a hard place. Zpool ststus shows no available but the gui does not show the volume.

From the startup, there seem to be some issues. Do these mean anything to you gurus?

Well, your networking issues are because your networking isn't configured properly.

But as for your zpool stuff, you've got me. First you said its not mounted, then you show a command that it was mounted(zpool status), but now you think its not. I don't know what advice to provide since you are providing conflicting information. The pool can't both be mounting but also not mounting.

Sorry for all the confusion. I probably won't become a guru before I actually read what you write. I am now with you on this one, I can browse my volume in shell. But not in GUI (this about the temporary break..?) And it does not help to restart, it's still not in the gui. Although it makes me happy to be able to browse my files in shell, what I really want is to find them on the share...

I really appreciate you helping me out here.

As cyber jock said, your network is not configured correctly.

How much RAM do you have in the server?

Ehm, I have 1519 MB. I haven't changed the networking settings lately, and they haven't bothered me before. I will read up and see if anything improves

And that's a big way to have problems. You should have 8GB minimum. 2GB is minimum for UFS. Less than 2GB and you will have random problems.

You should upgrade your system to at least 8GB of RAM.

Can't say I'm too surprised that you are having issues with that little RAM. You can lose your data suddenly and permanently if you don't meet the system requirements.
