I recently had a HDD fail in an old version of FreeNAS and have started from scratch in a new build using the existing 32bit HP Machine and a pair of 4TB drives in RAID1 Configuration.

-Stepped through the fresh install on USB with no issues
-Created my 'guest' account
-Created a new Group (with my Network name) for good measure if I want to expand later to using individual accounts.
-Created my new Volume 'MEDIA'
-Created my CIFS Share and added 'guest' access without password
-Configured and started the CIFS Service.

Everything working as it should on all devices across my network,
except a new folder has appeared in my Volume. /mnt/MEDIA/ named 'Guest'

In the user config I have enabled home directory mode
Set The home Directory to /mnt/MEDIA

I have also set hidden files to viewable in the Share settings

So Why has this mystery folder appeared?
I used the same config in an earlier FreeNAS version and never had it.

Thanks in advance

In the user config I have enabled home directory mode
Set The home Directory to /mnt/MEDIA
This is why there is a "Guest" folder, you told FreeNAS to make a Home Directory for the Account; so it did.
If you were to do the exact same steps and the Account was named "Robbks"; then you would have seen a folder created in "/mnt/MEDIA" called "Robbks"

Thanks a lot,

My old build either didn't have the option or I scanned over it.

That will be useful for future multi-users and their own folders/ permissions.
but for the gues, I'll disable it.

While I'm on the subject of the guest account,
watching the log window last night I noticed a repeated warning from time to time
"STATUS=daemon 'smbd' finished starting up and ready to serve connectionsWARNING: The "null passwords" option is deprecated"

Reading the bug report below is seems it's a samba issue and not a FreeNAS issue? Am I correct.

Thanks again

Just note that per the Manual (I was going to link a URL but it seems to be down). The recommended method is to create a Dataset just for User Home Directories and use that. More than likely due to permission issues/concerns.

That is a pretty old bug report and pertains to an older version of FreeNAS so I wouldn't count on it so much. Are you trying to use a blank/null password for your "Guest" account?

It's not that much older than the subject of the OP (which was 9.2.1.9, bug is 9.2.1.6).
Both of which are very old compared to the shipping version.

Ahh, correct I was thinking 9.10.1 since that is the version I wanted to link for the manual.... Thanks for catching that.

Correct.

Thanks all for your help on this.

But it's all null and void now anyway.
My dinosaur old desktop machine has finally succumbed to the pressures of 8TB of data and will refuse to boot with the drives attached.
