SOLVED FreeNAS USB drive has failed

My USB drive has failed that the Freenas was booting from. How do I go about retrieving the data on the disk on my NAS (was running v9.2.1.7 I think)?

Install FreeNAS to new media, boot, upload your config and you're good to go.

It might be.. but you were a good admin and made a backup of your config file, right? Right!?

Yes, except if you backup a bad copy, then continue checking against the bad copy, you'll keep having a bad copy. That's why ProtoSD and I don't use that. We'd rather just have another copy every day. Besides that, FreeNAS makes internal changes that seem to happen almost daily, so you aren't exactly saving yourself much for a feature that, if you need it, you'll want as many copies available as you can get your hands on. :)

Lets assume that there is no backup of config file. Is there anyway to access the files and folders?

Yes. Reinstall FreeNAS and everything will be there. You'll just have to reconfigure shares and stuff from scratch.

I have a copy of every configuration change I've made since I started. And unless I make a change, I don't get a backup copy. I'm not sure what configuration changes FreeNas makes internally, but it hasn't seemed to affect me.

What do you use to make your daily copy, and where do you store them?

I use the script I wrote and posted in the forums way back when to backup the file every night automatically. 11:05PM I get a pretty file in my folder. Here's what my backups look like right now.. ;)

Thanks you "people/boffins" that was pretty painless to reconfigure and get the shares working again. What are the essential files that contain the configs that require backup (btw upgraded to 9.3 also and type slowly as I have Linux learning disorder)?
