Freenas Upgrade or Fresh Install?

I have a question I want to upgrade my freenas from FreeNAS-8.3.0-RELEASE-p1-x64 (r12825) to 9.2.1.4.1 is better to just backup my configs and do a fresh install or can I just upgrade? I have read before that upgrades do not always go smoothly from 8 to 9

If you have another stick, install to that. That way it is trivial to go back if you have issues with the new version.

I agree with dlavigne. Be careful though, during the upgrade the docs mention the option to take steps to upgrade the ZFS version - if you do this, you will not be able to go back to v8 and you then must stick to the v9 series.
