Can I install FreeNAS on a SDD drive and then simply house it in an external enclosure and the hook it up to the USB port on the back on my router and access it that way? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Absolutely not. FreeNAS is built for x86 processors (amid other system requirements) and your router runs ARM.

You may find some package for DD-WRT that allows you to share files from a USB device, maybe even ZFS on Linux, but FreeNAS is definitely not happening there.
