Welcome to the FreeNAS Forums

Thank you for participating in the FreeNAS Forums! Working together, we can share knowledge and continue to improve FreeNAS.

These forum rules apply to everyone on these forums: users, moderators, and administrators. If you have any questions or concerns about these rules or their enforcement, please e-mail us at forum-abuse@freenas.org.

Please Search Before Posting

Many questions have already been asked and answered, and the results can be found with our built-in Google custom search box on the right of the forum screens, or with external internet search engines. This saves time for everyone, including the person who needs an answer.

Searching tips: search for the error message, removing unique values like time and date. Include the term freenas when using internet search engines.

Additional excellent sources of information are the online manual at http://doc.freenas.org/ and the Resources section at https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?resources/.

Before posting, please look through the forums a bit to become familiar with the different forum topics and standards.

Posting To Get A Response

Please include a specific subject title in a new post. This helps attract the attention of people knowledgeable and interested in that type of problem or situation.

Please include full, exact error messages. Do not paraphrase them. Putting effort into your post the first time will help you get the best responses to your issue.

Please provide the exact build number of the system, which can be found at System ‣ Information, as well as the amount of RAM on the system. If additional hardware information is needed, you will be asked to attach a debug file. Debug files are created with the System ‣ Advanced ‣ Save Debug menu entry.

Hardware information is extremely important when diagnosing problems. This includes:
  • motherboard make and model
  • CPU make and model
  • RAM quantity
  • hard drives, quantity, model numbers, and RAID configuration, including boot drives
  • hard disk controllers
  • network cards
It can be convenient to add hardware information to your signature (click your username ‣ Signature). Remember to update that signature when your hardware changes.

Code and Inline Code Tags

Use code tags to enclose blocks of output by selecting it from the three-dot menu icon. Alternatively, type [CODE]codeblockgoeshere[/CODE]. This preserves formatting and indenting and keeps messages looking like they did on the screen.

Inline code tags can be used to show single-line commands like ls /tmps /tmp. To use Inline Code tags, select the text you would like to surround with Inline code tags and select the Inline code tags option from the three-dot menu. Alternatively, type [iCODE]commandgoeshere[/iCODE]. For anything with more than one line, use [code] tags.

File tags can also be used by typing [file]filenamehere[/file]. Example: /users/john/freenas.mp4.

If the output is too long for a post, either attach the log file that contains the error message or put it on a web page and provide a link.

Be Respectful, Keep It Clean and Family-Friendly

Be respectful to others. Abuse, cursing, derogatory comments, insults, or personal attacks are not allowed. This is a dynamic community serving many different types of people from all over the world, and we all should be able to participate politely. Forum moderators will edit or remove inappropriate comments. In extreme cases, posters will be warned or banned.

Bumping Posts

Bumping posts is allowed. However, we do ask that you wait 48 hours before bumping a post. This prevents the same person from bumping posts constantly which can be considered rude, keeps the forums nice and tidy, and keeps things fair for other users asking questions.

No Advertising or Illegal Sites

Advertising of websites, services, or products by posters is not allowed. Pornography, drugs, warez, hacking, or links to websites of this type are prohibited.

Solicitation of Support

Requesting, demanding, or offering paid support is not allowed on the FreeNAS Forums. This is a forum of volunteers that graciously offer their time to assist FreeNAS users as they see fit. Professional FreeNAS support is available through iXsystems if immediate assistance is needed.

Do not Post The Same Thing Multiple Times

Do not post the same question or comment in more than one place. Duplicate posts will be deleted by moderators.

Posting Hardware Links

Buying hardware from a number of popular hardware vendors can actually help the FreeNAS project! Any time a forum user creates a link to amazon.com, ebay.com, superbiiz.com, or newegg.com an affiliate code is inserted. Purchasing items from these sites helps support the FreeNAS project and also provides others with a description of the items. Remember that links to link aggregation sites and manufacturer sites do not help support the FreeNAS project.

Offsite Links

Links to other sites that are appropriate and relevant to a discussion are welcome in posts. Moderators will remove inappropriate links.
