Hello,

I’m a relatively new FreeNAS user, I have about 2 months experience with FreeNAS under my belt, learning every day from this wonderful knowledge base here on the forum / community, you guys are the best.

In my email today I received 2 error emails from my FreeNAS box about one of my Hitachi / HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 drives. I’ll paste the two email errors below, and the hardware /software specs, along with the output of the “smartctl –a” output for the drive in question, in my case “/dev/da1”.

I don’t want to assume but I believe the drive is failing. I should probably swap it out with a replacement drive, then resilver, but before I do anything I’m looking for some guidance from you more experienced users. Hoping you guys can provide some guidance, I’m new to this stuff……..

Here we go……

Thanks!

Jeff

Yes, that's a disk in the process of dying, replace it now.

Agreed. POH 1351, relocated event count 681.
If that trend continues (and it most likely will!) the drive will soon be no more than a paperweight.

Thank you for the information and conformation on the error. I do have one HGST spare drive on hand, now to figure out how to replace this drive and resilver etc..... more reading to do! Know of any videos for v 11.3 to show the process?

thanks again!

Update...... After reading in the FreeNAS manual the section about "replacing a failing drive", and watching a few YouTube Videos on the process, I can successfully say my drive swap, and resilver went off without a hitch! Easy peasy.... ;) The 4 TB drive took around 6 hours to finish re silvering. Re added the new drive to the SMART schedules and were off to the races!

Thanks again guys, much appreciated!

Just waiting for the RMA on the drive and we'll be done with this little blip on the radar......

All the best,
Jeff
