Not sure that it even relates, but here is the current issue.

Can ping other computers except the freenas server by ip and hostname from my client.

Shell in freenas can ping all computers by IP and hostname.

Domain controller can access freenas server in explorer just fine, but not so from my client (results in cannot access).

DNS A record added to domain controller some time ago.

Interestingly my client can use explorer or web browser to access freenas by IP, just not hostname suggesting a DNS problem between my client and freenas (one way as freenas can ping my client by its hostname).

VPN on my client is setting the DNS, and I've added the domain controller as second DNS. IF it matters, VPN client is Mullvad.

Thanks in advance

What is a "Domain" computer?

Please clarify your post and be as explicit in your terms as possible.

That should have been Domain Controller. Post has been edited for more clarity.

Well. the culprit is the VPN software layer. It apparently cached my local dns info when the freenas server was on another IP. Both my client and domain/dns server (local net) have been cleaned up. If I turn off the VPN, local host name resolves correctly on my client. Turn it on and it resolves to an incorrect IP.

I'ts a bit unsettling that the VPN software/their server cached my local info.
