Hi, I've setup freenas 8.0.3 on three hard drives where I'm storing our family's music collection. I have an AFP share setup and my wife and I can connect via our MacBooks running Lion (10.7.3) using iTunes, Finder etc. I was given Time Capsule as a gift, I'd like to be able to have Time Machine backup these music files on Freenas to Time Capsule. Is this possible?

Yes.
Create one filesystem per macbook, ( 2x the physical disk would do fine) and share it as
an afp with the additional toggle for "timmachine".
When it has been in user for a few days you may increase/decrease the sizes if needed.
There is no need to do any snapshots on these filesystems-they will only waste space.

Time machine works fine with FreeNAS (using AFP of course). The only downside is that backups are a fair bit slower than than using an attached disk (wireless). They are plenty fast on wired gig-e.
