Hello Everyone,

After using my Qnap for the last few years it is time for a REAL NAS but I am new to building my own and def new to TrueNAS so I was hoping I could get some options. I plan on using TrueNAS Scale (thoughts on this as well?)

Overall, this is what I want to do:

  • File server
  • Would love to be able to access outside the home but right now, not to concerned, I will look more into later
  • Media Storage
  • Need transcoding (helping parents) with at most 3-4 at one time (most likely 1-2)
  • Need to connect to Google Drive
  • I backup to it
  • VM
  • Honestly, this is more for learning about Linux and other OS’.

I know a lot of building computers but not to much about NAS (I know computers but more function), do you feel this would meet my needs? Even if it will, I am more than open to any suggestions. Thank you

Honestly, your hardware selection isn't great. You're making one of the biggest cardinal sins, which is trying to use "gaming"-grade hardware to power a 24/7 server. You aren't using ECC memory, and worst of all, you're using an add-in SATA card (shudder).

The Hardware Recommendation Guide is definitely your friend here, and will help you make better decisions about your build: https://www.truenas.com/community/resources/hardware-recommendations-guide.12/

Of course, in the stricted sense, your build "will FreeNAS". But the question, in my opinion, is better phrased as: "Will it run TrueNAS the way you want it to?" And in that sense, I think your hardware will definitely let you down.

I think you'll be well served to look over some of the comments in this thread: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/feedback-on-nas-mini-server-builds.100241

So question then, I read the guide and the main reason I went with the CPU that I did was the ability of the CPU to transcode, my two biggest wants are to use the NAS as file storage and media player. I know I have a 1050 TI in the build but that is an okay GPU and may be considering going with something else. A lot of builts I have seen all use similar type setups. Am I just going to "high" and maybe go lower on the CPU and everything else? Is there something you could recommend? I do not need a full build but maybe just a CPU?

Sorry about the delay; I've been on vacation and haven't had a chance to respond.

Any Intel CPU with Quick Sync is capable of transcoding. Many of the newer Xeon CPUs with integrated graphics also have the Quick Sync capability. Also, i3 processors support both Quick Sync and ECC memory.

Get a better motherboard, a Xeon CPU w/ integrated graphics, and ECC RAM, and you'll have a great system.
