There were firmware updates released to allow VT-d for GPUs which resolved that issue. Again, no HBAs.

I would honestly stay with an other ESXi release that allows you to do full passthrough. Spend the 20-30 bucks to pick up an LSI Megaraid 1068 flashed to IT mode and use that for your ESXi datastores etc and pass through the SAS/SATA controller to freenas. The 1068 only supports 2TB disks FYI.

Definitely going to use passthrough, just wanted to make sure my understanding of the version was the same as ser_rhaeger who has it running already...
Going to use a M1015 flashed into IT mode as it seems to be widely supported...
