My previous FreeNAS build used old hardware I had lying around. I wanted to make a better system. I'd appreciate any input on this build I'm putting together. I'll use this for:
  • Web-hosting (3 or 4 small websites)
  • Plex server
  • Nextcloud
  • Torrent/Usenet access
  • VMs for various game servers
Hardware
  • CASE: CSE-846A-R920B, 24 Bay
  • PSU: Dual 920W-SQ PS
  • Mobo: X9DRi-LN4F+ Rev 1.20
  • CPU: E5-2670 V2
  • Ram: 128gb DDR3 (16x8gb PC3 10600R ECC )
  • Backplane: BPN-SAS-846A 24-port 4U SAS 6Gbps
  • HBA: 3x LSI 9210-8i
  • Freenas Install Drive: Kingston A400 120gb SATA ssd
  • Jail Drive: Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 250gb ssd (mounted in PCI slot with m.2->PCI adapter)
  • vdevs: 20x4tb 7200RPM SAS drives (half HP MB4000FCWDK, half Seagate ST4000NM0023), in 10 2 drive mirrors.

This is mostly used and a bit of what I had around. The HDDs are refurbished, and when I can get another good deal on a lot of SAS drives I'll have spares for rebuilding the mirrors if any drive fails. Any thoughts on missing hardware? Based on my reading, I don't believe a SLOG would

Out of curiosity why not use a SAS expander with 1 HBA instead of 3 HBAs? Are you worried about bandwidth of the pcie bus?
