Hi everyone,

I want to play with freenass and I want a good first impression by doing it right.

I have built servers in the past, but I always have doubt when purchasing. I don’t want to be disappointed and I want it to work. I have read lots of forum post, but I will need to experimented and read back some post, before understanding every aspect of freenas, still confuse about the vlog and cie.

- My last server built was in ±2013. Still working strong and serving me daily, by hosting VMs (ESXi).
- My old 15 TB (RAID6) is currently as near full used and the geek side of me want to play with a new toy.
- The FreeNAS built will be used to store musics, movies, TV series and files. I don’t intend to use plex.
- I would like to receive advices about my hardware choise. Thank you in advance.
- I prefer buying new hardware, but I can see the value and advantage to buy used.
- I wand IMPI or equivalent. I love to be able to remotely manage my old server.
- I want to use Raidz2.
- My budget is about 2000$ CAN for the hardware.

(P.S English is not my first language and I live in Canada, all price will be in CAN).

Here is my build :
I already bought the HBA card from another suggestion in the forum : HP H220 6Gbps SAS PCI-E 3.0 HBA LSI 9207-8i P20 IT Mode for ZFS FreeNAS unRAID just need the cable for it.
And I already bought 8 Hard Drive of 8 TB.
Hard drive : WD RED 8TB

Mother Board : SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSM-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236 - 299$
CPU : Intel Xeon E3-1220 V6 Processors BX80677E31220V6 - 279$
Memory : Crucial 16GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2666 Server Memory CT16G4WFD8266 – 129.99
Memory : Crucial 16GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2666 Server Memory CT16G4WFD8266 – 129.99
Boot drive : Intel 320 Series 40 GB SATA 2.5-Inch Solid-State Drive Brown Box – 96.78 $

For the case I’m still not sure I stop at those two choises :
Supermicro CSE-826BE16-R920LPB 2U Server Chassis 2x920W 12x 3.5" BPN-SAS2-826EL1
Or
NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server Chassis w/ 20 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS 6G Drive Bays

For a grand Total of (depending of the case) about 1800 $ + taxes and shipping

During my search, I found on EBAY a seller and I can have the build :
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Build-your...SAS-HD-X9DRI-F-/153446117496?oid=183624128837

Je présume que tu parles français alors 'salut' ;-). IMO, the used server is way overkill in term of CPU power since you only plan to store files. Also it will not be energy efficient all. Your new build looks ok to me. Might consider adding more RAM to reach the golden 1 GB / TB storage : recommended but not mandatory. This setup would run plex easily by the way.

You also might want to consider other servers on eBay from the Supermicro X9 generation that would work well enough much cheaper.

Bonjour et merci pour la réponse Hervon, je parle effectivement français.

I know that the second server is way overkill in term of CPU. more never hurt :).

Yes, I plan to add another 32 GB of ram in near future., maybe right now with this setup. I read the FreeNAS recommend to have 1 GB for every 1 TB.

I'll still search for other option for the X9 build generation.

Thank again.

I second hervon's eBay suggestion. You can pick up some gen X9 servers for under US$500. (Shipping will cause a bit of a bite - $100 for shipping to me in Canada).
