Hi everyone,
I want to play with freenass and I want a good first impression by doing it right.
I have built servers in the past, but I always have doubt when purchasing. I don’t want to be disappointed and I want it to work. I have read lots of forum post, but I will need to experimented and read back some post, before understanding every aspect of freenas, still confuse about the vlog and cie.
- My last server built was in ±2013. Still working strong and serving me daily, by hosting VMs (ESXi).
- My old 15 TB (RAID6) is currently as near full used and the geek side of me want to play with a new toy.
- The FreeNAS built will be used to store musics, movies, TV series and files. I don’t intend to use plex.
- I would like to receive advices about my hardware choise. Thank you in advance.
- I prefer buying new hardware, but I can see the value and advantage to buy used.
- I wand IMPI or equivalent. I love to be able to remotely manage my old server.
- I want to use Raidz2.
- My budget is about 2000$ CAN for the hardware.
(P.S English is not my first language and I live in Canada, all price will be in CAN).
Here is my build :
I already bought the HBA card from another suggestion in the forum : HP H220 6Gbps SAS PCI-E 3.0 HBA LSI 9207-8i P20 IT Mode for ZFS FreeNAS unRAID just need the cable for it.
And I already bought 8 Hard Drive of 8 TB.
Hard drive : WD RED 8TB
Mother Board : SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSM-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236 - 299$
CPU : Intel Xeon E3-1220 V6 Processors BX80677E31220V6 - 279$
Memory : Crucial 16GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2666 Server Memory CT16G4WFD8266 – 129.99
Memory : Crucial 16GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered DDR4 2666 Server Memory CT16G4WFD8266 – 129.99
Boot drive : Intel 320 Series 40 GB SATA 2.5-Inch Solid-State Drive Brown Box – 96.78 $
For the case I’m still not sure I stop at those two choises :
Supermicro CSE-826BE16-R920LPB 2U Server Chassis 2x920W 12x 3.5" BPN-SAS2-826EL1
Or
NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server Chassis w/ 20 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS 6G Drive Bays
For a grand Total of (depending of the case) about 1800 $ + taxes and shipping
During my search, I found on EBAY a seller and I can have the build :
