The only downside is if some files become infected with say ransomware then that could migrate automatically to the backup before you know it. This is why I backup important data like photos to DVD media periodically. You will never be 100% safe unless you have a air-gaped system but you at least do what you can to minimize the pain.

Snapshots on the primary.

But yes, you're right. Eventually you'll have to expire snapshots unless you plan for infinite storage.

Which essentially is what a growing pile of DVDs is.

Nope, you need to destroy that pile of DVDs to keep things organized. I keep the last two backups of DVDs, the rest get destroyed.

Snapshots, I really like those but I don't use them because I don't have unlimited storage as you pointed out.

Everyone needs to determine how they can best implement a backup solution for their use. All we can do is point out options.
