For the sake of closure: I fixed it. I don't know what the issue was, I suspect the "factory restore" I ran left some cruft in some config somewhere from when I was screwing around with it, after a clean reinstall, I cannot get the error to resurface.
In my case an important piont was making sure the idmap range fir with the UID range of my users, and that it did not overlap with the default idmap range in the smb config. Thanks for the help.
