A few days ago, my backup server sent me an email about one of the drives (they're all late 2015 3TB WD Reds) had a pending sector. Naturally, I checked the SMART data and most of the failure indicators were low, but non-zero. Since it's a RAIDZ2 pool which is a backup of the main server, I thought I'd let it evolve and see if it degraded further. It did and, more interestingly, it failed a SMART short test:
This is interesting, since it proves that SMART short tests do catch some failures on their own. In turn, that shows that it makes sense to run them daily, between long tests.
For reference, here's another drive from the server, in nominal condition:
Fun fact: This pool had been needing 24 hours for a scrub, which really isn't warranted given that it's low-use and far from full. With the new drive resilvering, it's looking like ~3 hours for a resilver.
