I just added a 4TB NAS disk to my system and would like to remove an old 160GB disk that I don't use. Plus I am out of physical hard drive mounting space, so this will open a spot. What is the proper way to remove the 160GB from the FreeNAS system?

It depends upon the vdev layout. Post the output of zpool status.

Can this (zpool status) information be obtained through the web GUI? The motherboard is buried within a case that I can't easily access if I need to get to the console. (no monitor attached)

I should add that there is no data that I need to save on the disk that I wish to remove.

Yup. click the shell icon and type that command (zpool status).

Yes - I use my FreeNAS as backup storage, and I have a duplicate of each FreeNAS hard drive in my main (Windows) system. Every week or two I create images of each of my 4 systems (wife's computer, son's computer, etc) and keep a copy in two places. Maybe not the best / smartest way to do it, but it works for me. I am certainly open to suggestions. I started using the FreeNAS as more of a trial on some old hardware I had - just to see if I could make it work. Well, two years later it continues to perform flawlessly, despite my non-kosher hardware choices and likely improper disk setup. But that is why I keep my backups in two places.

I have a similar setup Chris, very old hardware re-purposed for FreeNas. And yes, I don't trust it much so I plan on duplicating as much as possible just to be safe.

And as cheap as hard drives are now... I just got two 4TB Seagate NAS drives for $119 each.

In this case where you have a single drive backing a dataset, just detach and destroy the dataset. Poof data is gone.

Ah, yes - I was actually just reading about the Detach function in the FreeNAS documentation. Thanks for confirming...
