Can still ping server
Can still access data over SMB.
Noticed some emails in my inbox which gmail so goddamn kindly decided to hide about critical heat alerts - however server and data do appear to still be in tact.

None the less, following error when trying the web UI.

An error occurred.
Sorry, the page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
Please try again later.

If you are the system administrator of this resource then you should check the error log for details.

Faithfully yours, nginx.

One of my disks has been pulled offline and the array is degraded (but I have 2 disk redundancy luckily)
Unsure which disk or why, I've not got an email besides basic temp alert emails.

My monthly SMART check might be occurring.
Any suggestions, I'd like to reboot her cleanly - but .. I dunno, I'm surprised to see the web UI offline, anyone?

Thanks all.
Note: pretty sure I was right up to date, perhaps 1 update behind (maybe a week or two) 9.3 - on a HP Microserver N54L, she's been fine for 7+ months thus far?

Thanks.

Scratch that, she's no longer responding to ping, I attempted to telnet into it with putty and ping has stopped.
Dunno if she's rebooting or not, I was just about to respond to this bug report too.

Ok she rebooted herself, according to alerts no disks are offline - but one of them has had it's accoustic level and all kinds of settings changed? very odd.
I need to re-initiate a ful smart check I think, anyone recall the command?

Ok I've initiated this.

[root@freenas] ~# smartctl -t long /dev/ada5

Sorry for messing up the forums, my little box misbehaves so rarely, I keep forgetting how to administer it.
Anyone know how I VIEW the resules in 546 minutes?
Thanks all whom read this thread, she looks ok - but the random reboot is worrying - I don't have the budget to build a new box (because next one I build will be a very expensive beast)

EDIT:
I believe the command to read my logs back is
"smartctl -a /dev/adaXX"

I'll do that tomorrow morning.

Is there any logs I should produce which would assist diagnosing this fault in future? Considering only one other person has it and the devs said "WTF produce logs" - sopmeone tell me which file to get and I'll pull a copy?

Thanks

I've had this issue a couple of times. Everytime i did, it had something to do with a bad or failing boot device (This doesn't mean it always has to be).

Could you post full hardware config ( Ram? ECC ? boot device ?)
Have you checked the boot device ? ( scrub)

Concerning updates:

It might not be everyone's idea about it, but i still hold true to the simple truth: "if it is not broken, don't fix it". I fought enough wars on the battle field where a simple patch that should require no more then 5 minutes ended up costing me a night or worse.

This is especially true with something like a data repository. So unless you have a requirement, need or problem that a specific update adresses. Just leave it be.

I have 8gb non ECC ram in the Microserver N54L - it's been rock solid 7 months though.
I'm using a USB boot device, semi-decent USB3 key (2 of them - with ZFS enabled) I can't recall how or what I did but I did the thing which makes them redundant (IIRC?)

Must admit, not sure if I have a scrub even configured for the boot array, does one get made as default if you make the boot volume a ZFS volume?

Ok so I'm changing the default monthly smart test routine, instead of the 15'th of the month, 6 disks doing a full long test.
I'm having the 12'th = disk0, 13'th = disk 1, 14'th = disk2 and so on.... may reduce heat and strain on the system.

Anyone got any suggestions regarding the log files, I still know when the web UI went offline and I'm happy to upload a file regarding this issue?
Finally, recommended way of running a scrub on the boot volume?
EDIT: Boot volume seems to auto scrub itself, despite me not having a job configured for it, last scrub on the 4'th - current condition healthy? Is this automated once you configure a spanned boot volume?

One more thing, sorry.
Results of the smart test for the disk which had accouustic settings, power settings reset.
Please remember to read the 2 posts above though :)

I see you have a 5TB drive. Are all 6 disks, 5TB? If so, it could be starved for RAM, with just 8GB. How full is the volume?

Are you running one of the hacked BIOS' that allow the other two connections (ODD & eSATA) to run in AHCI mode?

I have 8gb non ECC ram in the Microserver N54L ...

6x5TB, never been an issue before with RAM but yes, only 8gb.
Am running hacked bios, have been for 2 years? but only 7 months on FreeNAS
Could be RAM, won't deny it's possible - but is there a way to confirm? - does running a smart long test chew RAM? where's the log file Jordan needs?

The "thing" is a ZFS mirror.

That disk is too hot now (48C), and has been way too hot (68C) in the past.

Yeah I imagine that's not ideal - I agree 100%
Doesn't explain the webUI death tho

Technically the server was only designed for four hard disks and the OP is squeezing 6 7200 RPM drives in it..

Is the hot drive in the ODD bay? What are the temps of the other drives?

Yes the disks are too hot (at times) but generally, when no scrub or smart long test is being performed, they run sub 50c - not ideal but they've done this for 8 months.
Definitely would like to cool better and or replace the whole system one day but as it stands, I'd love to know what log file I should be pulling in case this happens again.

A drive should never go past 40 °C, even during scrub or SMART tests.
