I have a fairly new setup system with FreeNAS 9.3 (latest) and five 2TB NAS disks running ZFS1

It is a XEON with 64 Gb ECC
Booting using a USB-SSD device.

I have just made it factory defaults and reinit the disks to start over. It could be done again if it needs to be done, nothing stored on it yet.

I REALLY CANNOT MAKE THIS NFS AND CIFS SHARING TO WORK!!

I am so fucking confused I will kill myself any moment, now :-(

I have been working proffessionally with computers(mostly windows) since 1990. I even have my own Company in the business but it is so dam frustrating that I wont solve this.

I was wondering if anyone REALLY GOOD here at this is willing to help me set this up if I pay for it?
Maybe a session with teamviewer could work.

I want some windows shares and some NFS shares and permissions set for 3-4 different users.
Its about 5-6 shares.
I have three webcams using NFS and some two other box using NFS. Not sure if they support NFS4, maybe only 3.
And a few windowsboxes using CIFS.

Details can come later. I can pay with paypal.

It appears that @Mirfster has already linked to my Samba sharing and permissions video. It's worth the look if you need a starting point. The video only covers Samba/CIFS, I've not had the time to create one for other sharing methods, but it's likely I will in the near future.

I am so fucking confused I will kill myself any moment, now :-(
I really hope you're not serious. We're here to help, so please don't get upset over this. It's not worth it.

You might benefit from joining us on IRC for some real-time help, you can find us on Freenode.

Thank you for your replies and concern. I will NOT kill myself of course but as more I read about this, the more confused I get.

Thanks for the links, the manual about shares have been read a dozens of times...only get more confused.

I have been reading about this over a year from time to time and is getting quite exhausted of it, hence my eager to PAY somebody to set it up. Maybe I could learn something of it too...perhaps.

My hardware is:
Supermicro X9SCL+-F -mainboard ( http://www.supermicro.nl/products/motherboard/Xeon/C202_C204/X9SCL_-F.cfm )
It has two Intel® 82574L GbE Controllers and one extra for IPMI
XEON E3-1240v2 3,4-3,8GHz with 8Mb cache and 4 cores(16 with HT)
32Gb (4x8) ECC minne Kingston 1600Mhz
5st Seagate 2TB Enterprise NAS disks 7200 rpm

Reason to use NFS is that it is multi-threaded and CIFS is supposedly not that on FreeNAS(?).
And also much more efficient protocol over network considering bandwidth.

When all my webcams is up and running recording it will get very demanding. Right now I have only three but planning on getting more later on when this is setup and running.

My dream would be that data-share is CIFS and Video both. Then The Webcam-shares that is under video is NFS.
In this case my windows boxes could connect to both Data and Video using CIFS and still see what my webcams are recording.
My Two TVs could connect to Video using NFS and play movies or even what the webcams have recorded.

/EDIT: The webcams need to "format" the connected NFS drive too so I need each cam on separate share so I can limit the storage. I hade this working long time ago. Then I use 500Gb quota or something I think. When the webcam "format" the share it wipes out anything on it and create its own subfolders and so.
So if I would connect the webcams on same share they will destroy for each other so to speak.
Maybe I need separate dataset for each? Last time it worked I had a 500gb drive/share that the webcam overwrote the oldest and so on.

You are correct to say that Samba is not multi threaded. If it was and the parent process died all connections would be lost. Samba spawns a new process for each connection.

It's not recommended to have more than one file sharing service per dataset because you will come across some weird file locking issues.

I'm currently on a mobile device and can't answer in full. I'll do that later today.

Ok

I sure can split it so I got the nfs on separate dataset. I need to limit size as I said before because of cameras way to handle storage.

But it would be great if all shares used the maximum storage available dynamically. So I dont lock a certain amount of storage to for example cifs.

I could also install AD if cifs permission and groups get easier. I master MS AD very well.

Thanks for clarifying that nfs and cifs shouldnt coexist.

Looking forward to more detailed answer when you find the time

Magnus,

in the interest of saving your life. Check the thread I made about FreeNAS. It has step-by-step instructions. You can follow that. Yes, all their guides suck. That is the best reference on the matter thanks to Mirfster. You won't need help.

It will only work for Windows clients though.

Datasets are like partitions but you don't allocate space to them. So if total zpool is 100TB, each dataset in it will show 100TB space left per dataset.

Your porn shop will work great with all the webcams and don't worry about smb being single threaded because you will get your full gigabit speed easily. :D

Also, if you can't get it set-up yourself don't use it because it will have probs eventually and you'll lose your data if you don't know at least enough for a basic setup.

You'r all lifesavers :-D

I will look into that later(must sleep now 02.00)

I understand datasets now! Good!

Maybe I will make data and video Cifs-shares and only the webcams nfs. And put the cams on different datasets. Then I can set them up individually if needed.

I will now go back to my pornproducing...

@zol, I havent found your thread yet, but will keep looking.
Thanks @m0nkey_ for video on cifs-shares, it helped alot.:)

So if I split windows shares and NFS shares then I have made a new list of setup, like this:

6885_7B098XJNAWEN1456046756.jpg

Then put up some windows shares, like this:

6885_6AVQJC2PUP551456046756.jpg

They work as intended

Then try with one NFS share then:
6885_2WIK45KRY52CK1456046756.jpg

Putting these permissions on the NFS top level dataset:

6885_2H0CYKK9XU04K1456046757.jpg

Then this on nested dataset:

6885_2XK8LAEKGQ68S1456046756.jpg

And these sharing settings:
6885_19JT1PU6319LY1456047423.jpg

When I try to connect camera it say permission failed.

How to set up this NFS?

The webcam can now record and play again

Will continue and run with separate datasets now.

Would be very nice if i could connect to the webcams share in windows to read though.

Thanks all. Where to send money?

If you leave the dataset type as Unix, and make a read-only CIFS share, it should work.

Yes, it worked. I unchecked "make rights standard and recursive" when making the CIFS share.

I made it on parent of webcams; video and then could access all webcams storage on single cifs-share. So it worked very well.

Thanks
