USB drive no longer boots

I shutdown my FreeNAS server for Hurricane Irene and when I went to reboot it, I found out that the USB drive was no longer recognized.

I originally installed version 0.7.1.5065 and I have a configuration backup from June. This file says that the version is "8.3" and its "lastchange" was "1302057373." This version confuses me.

Would anyone please give me some pointers on setting up a new USB drive? I want to be careful so that I don't accidentally lose the data on the drives.

Without commenting on anything else, that date is
