Hi

My Sony TV will only play MKV video files via a usb storage device and not through tthe Video player via ethernet shares.

Is it possible to use share folders on the free nas via usb connection mimicking a usb storage device

USB generally doesn't work like that. In a normal scenario, there is a host (your TV) and a device that connects to it (your USB storage device). The designers of USB never intented for two hosts to connect via USB. I have seen some devices that will connect two hosts together, but generally they use specialized software that you have to install on one or both hosts.

The easiest option is probably just to eliminate the NAS all together and get yourself a large external hard drive that you can load up with video.
