Upgrading

Ok, so I thought I'd upgrade to the latest release, I'm coming from 6.2.1.5. I'd read before hand that if anything was to go wrong I could just boot into my previous version by pressing F2 when prompted at boot up. Firstly after the upgrade I noticed all my jails had gone, not sure if that is the norm? secondly after applying my backed up config this didn't add the jails back? and lastly when I've booted back to the old version I'm confronted with the same issue of jails missing, plugins unavailable and also unable to even get to the services.
