Hello All,
Please inspect the daily run output and advise .... should I be worried ? There are similar posts in the FN forums but it's a bit confusing - I've read so much I feel the need to reach out for a lifeline - I am concerned and would like to have another member take a look at the output and recommend a proper solution
thanks !

Backstory:
I've upgraded the Firmware on my HBA and set it to IT mode. Upgrading the HBA has allowed me to run some scripts for 'Smart Data' and 'Zpool status' and has also produced some errors on the Daily Security Run Output - please see below -

P.S. I'm hoping the 'big guns' ( @paleoN ) / etc... are available -similar to a thread I recently saw regarding errors in the Storage forum -
Is this a bad sign: smartd: 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors....?

P.P.S. Yes - things are currently running from a Lexar USB drive for boot temporarily - this will be changed soon to a 2.5 HDD ( originally set up using 300GB Maxtors in Raid1 - when updating the HBA I lost that config then chose to run FreeNAS off the mobo AHCI for boot )

Let me recap what I think you are saying so that we are all on the same page...

1) All was working fine before you did the following steps.
2) You reflashed your SAS controller from some firmware version (Maybe P15) to P20, then you started getting these messages.

If above it true then I would recommend you roll back to the previous version on your SAS controller, or backup your configuration file and upgrade to 11.1 version and try again.

You may have da8 as a failing drive, you need to ensure you are running routine SMART Long/Extended tests and examine your reports. A single sector error is not a major concern however a lot of these are an issue.

Please clarify your situation, remember that we could misinterpret what you are saying so clarity is important, and you may need to provide the entire output of dmesg.

Truthfully, - I'm not sure all was working fine because I was running in Raid Mode on the HBA not IT mode, so I was not able to read the smart data from the Drives - they were 'hidden' behind the controller.

Yes it was version P14 I think... but not in IT mode, so I flashed it to P20 in IT mode

I forgot to add in the specs that I am running FreeNAS-11.1-U4 - I corrected my original post and am going to correct the info in my signature to update the current build info so it is correct.

I can provide dmesg no problem, but is there a way to pipe that into a file ? could anyone provide a good syntax for running dmesg so I can upload the info here concisely ?

Sorry for the second posting... Have you backed up your data? I would do this before getting too invested in this becasue I'm not certain what is goign on right now and protecting your data is likely something you want to do. Since you were running it as a true RAID, did you destroy the RAID before reflashing the controller? I'm just asking as this might be important to someone.

Some of the most imprtant things I'm looking for in the dmesg file is how each hard drive is assigned and there are several entries for this. RAID controllers flashed to HBA is not my specialty but we should be able to put enough data out that someone else migth be able to give you good sound advice.

OK - I may have not been completely clear on that RAID comment - please allow me to clarify:
  1. I setup FreeNAS before checking that the HBA was in IT mode, I assume it was in non-IT mode - which I called 'RAID' mode above - especially since I couldn't run any smartctl commands through the CLI ( putty ) - I read some other posts where other users had the same issue so I flashed the HBA into IT mode.
  2. As far as the drives themselves go, I originally set them up in a RAIDZ2 in FreeNAS - I did not destroy the Volume - Pool or Dataset before the flash to p20 - but I did have a backup of those files on another machine.
The dmesg file for 'today' has 3502 lines - I'll post a couple things from a few other commands I think might be helpful - I'll add them into the original post - please let me know if there's more to uncover

We will take it one step at a time. Since this is a production system, think about scanning your files to ensure you are not publishing anything that could cause you a security risk. No one is looking to put you on a ledge to hang.

Thanks joeschmuck !! I guess I'm just waiting for another set of 'eyes on' - in the meantime I am going to do the following:
  1. Run a long smart test on da8 ( in process now )
  2. Order another SAS cable to connect the SM backplane to the Controller card.
  3. Install a 2.5 HDD to replace the USB - ( I like that better since a lot of USB's failed on me over years past )

So I'm looking at your posting a bit more and I think I see a descrepancy:

your original posting lists seven hard drives and one USB Flash drive and these are all assigned da0 to da7. This all matches everything you have posted so far.

Question: What is the magical da8 drive? I'm confused!

Fair Question !! (I thought I had edited yesterday and took that reference out !!) - I was making another post and got confused, then posted erroneous info here -sorry - getting tired too early these days !

So I'm still confused, you posted an error message that lists da8 (in the bottom of your first posting in the error messages) so how did you get da8? Are you posting from two systems?
