i have out grown unraid that being said

what i trying to plan for is a new 48 drive storage system
doing a complete clean setup for those 48 drives
now i want to do is try to add my unraid drives into the zpool using a vdev

now would that even be possible or is my best bet to transfer all data over
then wipe the drives and add those drives to the zpool

if its possible to add them i rather go that way
transfer in house would take days and that opens up to the murphy's law

Not without reformatting them.

figured that would be the answer

now on the 48 drive system
would i need to separate the drives into different raidz2 or raidz3s?
example would be 6 drives in raidz2 and 8 sets of those
could i go higher
or should i set it up differently??

raidz spans beyond 10 disks are generally not advisable due to lengthy scrub and resilver times. Tough to say what would be the optimal setup for you without a use case.

You can certainly stripe a zpool across multiple raidz2's or raidz3's. You could do 6 raidz2's of 8 drives each, in a single zpool.

Happy you are getting away from UNraid I tried it out at the end of 2018 and could not get the speeds I was used to with freenas. Now that it has Docker support I bet a lot more peolpe will be coming over to freenas.

Yeah only thing I can say freenas had over unraid be for the docker support was speed and native support for ZFS. I think you will be really happy ones you get it all working and set up. And if you setup 10Gb/s the Transfer/Read speed of Files at or around 900MB/s is just so worth it. That was the one thing that got me was the read speed of file's for unraid.

You may search our forums for zfs performance analysis threads - I've seen a few of them recently...
