Hi,

I have an older UnRaid machine that I used for a number of years. I have since bought a new mobo (SuperMicro x9scm-f-o), 16gb of ecc memory, and a i3 cpu. I currently have 1-2tb drive, and 4-1.5tb drives in the UnRaid machine.

In my desktop computer, I have 2-4tb (about half of each drive has data on it) drives that I eventually want to migrate over to the FreeNas machine.

Would I be able to set up the FreeNas with the older hdd's (1-2tb and 4-1.5tb drives), migrate all of my data from my 2-4tb over, then after it's all done, move the 2-4tb into the FreeNas? I realize I'll lose all of my data on the UnRaid.

Also, I'll most likely buy another 4tb drive, so that at the end of all of this, I'll have 3-4tb drives in the FreeNas and I'll take out all of the smaller drives.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,

Jon

Thank Eric. Lots of information to read there. Time to immerse myself...

With freenas you will have better luck if you plan out your disk usage better than that. You can't randomly add drives and drives of multiple sizes will fall to the size of the lowest common denominator in a vdevs.
