Hi everybody!

I have a real strange problem with my home Freenas 9. server. I noticed that from some days when my Freenas System is plugged in to the network the ping goes to very high values and the speed of my ADSL gets almost halved. You can see the results in the pictures attached. About 5 Mbit (optic fiber is coming where I live) and 63 ms are the normal values I have always had. When I plug in the network cable in my server I suddendly have 460 ms of ping and 2,50 mb of download. Everything on the server is working well. The server has three different NICs installed, so I tried to use a different NIC but nothing changes, the problem remains. The only strange thing is the network load in the freenas webGui (I attacched a picture of this). It has very high values for every interface I tried to use, also when the server is in a idle status. I'm sure that Freenas is the cause of this issue, but I really don't know where to start from. I tried to ping the router from freenas and everything seems to be OK (see the picture). The ping values to www.google.com from freenas are about 100 ms.

Thank you for the support!

Post your hardware and give details of your other network equipment.
Hardware will generally be at fault, or cabling perhaps. Without knowing
your specifics regarding your setup, it's impossible to get to the issues
without a long drawn out dialogue. Help us and we can help you.

Few tidbits that may help:

First, if you have only 1 network segment (likely the case if you are a home user), only 1 NIC should be attached to your network unless you are using some kind of lagg setup.

Second, is it possible your FreeNAS has been compromised? Could someone have accessed your server through the internet and installed some kind of software that is generating the traffic you see.

Third, do you have any jails or plugins? Try turning them off and see of that helps.

Fourth, could you have some kind of network loop?

This is the result of my ifconfig.

the problem is the same for each one of the three NICs installed. It is strange because the problem appeared only few days ago. I also tried to change network cable and to plug directly in the server to the main router, but nothing changes. Could it be a problem of the router?

Hardware:

motherboard: asus m3n78 vm

cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 940 Processor

ram: 8gb of DDR2 800 mhz

storage:

2 Western digital green (mirrored)

2 Western digital blue 250 GB

Kingston data traveler 8 GB for OS

thank you again for the answers!

Stop your jails and check your results. It's probably your switch that can't handle the network load. It's probably own clouds web server (not sure which one you are using) that is causing the issue but start with all jails off and test. Then start one jail at a time and test to see which one is at fault.

I gave up on having owncloud on FreeNAS. Run it on a Linux VM and most issues go away.

Problem solved! It was BT Sync jail fault. There was something wrong in that. After I turned off the plugin everything worked back perfectly. The plugin wasn't responding anymore. I reinstalled it and everything is OK . Thanks everybody for the advices and the help!
