I'm a new FreeNAS user, and am about to move a few TB of data from a non-networked HD to my FreeNAS box. This data is already in a structure that works for me--for sake of argument, folders for Music, Videos, Pictures, Documents, Backups. I'd like to maintain this structure, but be able to share each folder separately. It also feels weird that even if I wanted to share the whole disk, I'd have to create an NFS folder and move everything under it, rather than sharing an existing folder.

What are the normal strategies for this? Is it really the case that if one wants to share an existing folder, one has to create a new folder and move everything to it? Or can you use symbolic links?

Ultimately I might also want to use OwnCloud or the like to share things in that manner, but for now I'm talking about NFS shares.

You can share existing folders. There is no requirement to create an "NFS folder", just create a new share and select your existing folder.
