For me it doesn't work. I am running the OS off an SSD that is within the HTPC case. I would really appreciate it if SMART could stay activated for that one. However, if the flag is set to true, I get the subject error message.

EDIT: am on the 11.2 STABLE train ;)

I had the same problem. Deactivated smart on the usb sticks and restarted smart. Warning went away.

Interestingly 11.2 seems to have introduced an issue where I'm receiving emails about smart_daemon not running during a system shutdown. If I switch off my FreeNAS box at any time I get an email about smart_daemon. It is not enabled on my usb drives and any time I check the service is absolutely running. It's a little annoying.

I had the same issue. I followed the steps above to disable USB smart and it seems to have cleared up the issue.
