Hello.
On my Dell server I have PERC H730P Adapter switch to HBA. The smartd fails to start at boot and manually. /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf is empty
I try turn off smart to da5 or add -d removable to S.M.A.R.T. extra options: - smartd fails to start.
Try this on FreeNAS-11.1-U5 and current test on FreeNAS-11.1-U6. Same result.
What can I do to repair smartd to generate /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf

Code:
# camcontrol devlist

Okay, your card is using the mrsas driver. I believe this is a known issue that is going to be fixed in 11.2. SMART has been wonky on mrsas cards for a while now.

It is option to change driver to other to fix smart?
When I try on FreeNAS-11.2-BETA2 smartd won't work and have problem with new GUI. Did you know when its plan to release stable 11.2?

Not with that card. If you had an SAS3008-based card, you could flash it to IT mode and use the mpr driver, which works fine.

Not based on my experience. I was using an LSI 9271 with the drives in JBOD mode which also used the mrsas driver. The problem was the discovery process would fail resulting in an empty smartd.conf. Smartd would work if I manually hacked the file and then started smartd. I opened a bug report which was closed because IX doesn't support RAID cards, even when they are in JBOD mode. I switched to an LSI 9207 card, and the problems vanished.

Wasn't it reopened? Do you have the issue number?

Sounds like it's in the queue for backporting to 11.2.

If it matters to anybody, I have a kind of cheesy script to manually create the entries that can be appended to smartd.conf that will make it monitor disks until the next reboot.
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#

camcontrol devlist |
		grep 'scbus2.*,da[0-9]' |
		cut -f2 -d, |
		cut -f1 -d\) |
		while read drv
		do
				echo "/dev/${drv} -a -n never -W 0,0,0 -m noc@oau.org -M exec /usr/local/www/freenasUI/tools/smart_alert.py"
		done

Edit: the 'scbus2.*' stuff is specific to my use case. You would need to examine you own config to see which SCSI bus should be used for that line.
