Good afternoon Community,

I am attempting to become familiar with the SMART tools and I am running SMART tests on the drives that I am hoping to re-use in my FreeNAS installation.

I am watching ID's 5, 197, 198, 199. Also 194 Temperature- in which all disks seems to sit comfortably between 23 - 27C approx.

All have tested ok except for one.

I am performing the Long Test (smartctl -t long /dev/sdc) on my Win10 machine where it is currently installed. It keeps aborting at 90% remaining. (see below)

SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Short offline Completed without error 00% 11989 -
# 2 Extended offline Aborted by host 90% 11981 -
# 3 Extended offline Aborted by host 90% 11969 -
# 4 Short offline Completed without error 00% 11874 -

What are possible causes for it to Abort? Is the drive developing a fault?

Also, the tests tell me that a firmware update is available for my drives. I have downloaded the firmware update and read installation instructions which seem simple enough. My question is, is this one of those times that you should update no problem... or is it one of those times where you leave it unless you ABSOLUTELY have to.

Thank you.

How long are you letting this test run? A long test takes as few as 5 hours and as long as 12 hours. Are you aborting the test prematurely by shutting down or something? Normally if there is an error, it will say cant finish due to read error or something of the sort.

12000 power on hours is only 1.5 years roughly, is it under warranty? If you really want a better idea if these drives are going to be ok to use, you should consider running a badblocks test on all of them. The test will destroy the data on the drives so if there is data on it DO NOT RUN BADBLOCKS. If you are ok with going forward and losing the data, if any, there are numerous drive burn in guides on this forum to follow, SMART is a good start but far from the only thing you should do before moving to "production".

Extended self-test routine
recommended polling time: ( 341) minutes.

This is almost 6 hours. With interruptions to the test (disk activity) it could take considerably longer.

Hello John Digital

I am starting these tests just before going to bed for the night and then checking them in the morning some 8 or 9 hours later. So the tests are running uninterrupted by humans.

All programs and apps are shutdown. It is just Win10 running.

I purchased this particular hard drive in 2011.

I understand BadBlocks testing is destructive. Is there a version of Badblocks I can run on a Win10 machine, or is it solely run from FreeNAS. Would the Windows equivalent be chkdsk /r?

----Edit---
I should also mention my FreeNAS system is still in the design stage.

I have noticed in the past that the last 10% of testing takes awhile, the fact that its saying aborted by host and doesnt say anything about an error makes me suspect a windows snafu. Try a linux live gparted distro just to be safe. Let it run a couple more hours just to be sure.
