Not the first time that has been suggested/mentioned in these forums. ;)
Unfortunately, the answer is always that a UPS is not an adequate replacement for a proper SLOG with PLP. Other factors can come into play that are outside of the UPS' Control like Power Cord(s) knocked out, PSU Fault, System Freeze, etc.
The only other *viable* suggestion I know of is using an actual Hardware Raid that has a BBU to attach a SLOG to. I first saw this mentioned by @jgreco as an "unorthodox alternative for SLOG" in this thread (which is a highly suggested read).
However, in the end I would still opt for having a SSD with PLP.
