Hello
I searching cheap pc for free NAS for virtualization and dlna, samba, ftp, etc. What do you think about this server: http://allegro.pl/hp-ml310g5p-xeon-x3330-4x2-66ghz-4gb-2x146gb-f-vat-i5507994730.html

CPU: 1 x Intel Xeon Quad x3330 - 2.66GHz
CPU Socket: 1 x
Chipset: Intel® 3210 Chipset
Port internal:
1x PCIe x8
3x PCIe x1

Port external: 2 x Ethernet RJ-45 Gbit LAN
4 x USB (2x Vorderseite)
1 x PS/2 Maus und Tastatur
1 x VGA
2 x Parallel
1 x Seriell
disk controller: HP Smartarray E200/128 SAS Controller
RAID-Level 0, 1, 5, 10
graphic: OnBoard
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800MHz
HDD: 2 x 146 GB SAS 15k HDD
1 x DVD

I would like to change SAS drives for normal 3,5 SATA drives which I have in home. I read that it will work (plug SATA for SAS controller).
What do you think about power consumption?
Have somebody use some similar configuration as FreeNAS ?

I cannot read Polish, but I also didn't find any reference to ECC on that page. Make sure that your machine supports ECC RAM. Believe me, you will be much happier with ECC. If so, you still might have to increase the RAM on that machine.

FWIW, many on the forums use the HP ML10 and that could be another option if this one does not support ECC

Likely very high.

I haven't, and wouldn't recommend it. Performance will be atrocious with the DDR2 RAM and associated front-side bus. The RAM is inadequate (you'd need at least 8 GB), so you'd pay more to expand there (if it's even possible). It's uncertain that the HBA/RAID card is supported either.

The better source for the Proliant ML10 in the US is tigerdirect.com; see http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5038747&CatId=329. I understand that variants of that server are available in much of the world, but perhaps not that configuration at that price. If not, it might be worth trying to have it shipped to .pl from tigerdirect.

CPU is from Generation Yorkfied (LGA775, Xeon version of Core 2 Quad) -> has an FSB, is a performance bottleneck for ZFS
http://ark.intel.com/products/35432/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X3330-6M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

Max Memory Size for that chipset is 8 GB, which is just the minimum recommended amount for FreeNAS

Disk controller: Support for a single drive is limited to 2TB, can most probably not operate as an HBA, bad choice for FreeNAS
