RAID 1 using FreeNas?

I am looking for a solution for a video surveillance system. One risk in a robbery is that the bad guys take the storage system with them. One solution I am thinking is to have local storage on the video server mirrored to a NAS or iSCSI device located separately.

Is this idea of a local hard drive mirrored to FreeNAS possible?

I don't think a RAID1 mirror can be located across 2 separate devices. You're looking for a kind of instant replication system. I'm not sure what options are available for something like that.

FreeBSD is perfectly capable of doing this, but FreeNAS isn't (yet). The feature is called HAST.

But an easier solution (and one that you can do today) is just to get a DVR lockup box. Looks like they even sell them at Home Depot now.

Though I'd suggest finding your local security distributor and asking them what they have available. So what you do is you bolt that down someplace somewhat hidden, stick your DVR storage in there, and then set up your DVR to frequently rsync to FreeNAS too, or something like that. The time the burglars spend breaking into the DVR lockbox gives the DVR system time to replicate data to the remote system - assuming, of course, that you've protected the DVR system's power and network connectivity. But really they probably just won't bother.
