Use Case: SMB Target for Backup Storage. Altaro and MSP360 backup software are used. 120TB most likely used, but want some growth available, so looking to top out around 175TB.
Constraints: 2U rackspace and Dell PowerEdge Hardware

Proposed Hardware
Dell PowerEdge r740xd2
Front: 24 x 3.5" Bays
Rear: 2 x 3.5" Bays
HBA330 Card
BOSS Card 240GB x 2 in R1 (For OS)
Intel x710 or x520 (I have both and can use either one, but the network is 10GbE)
2 x 4210 Intel Silver 10C 2.2Ghz
256GB RAM (4 x 64GB DDR4 ECC LRDIMM 2666Mhz)
2 x 750W 80 Plus Platinum Efficiency Power Supply Unit

This is where the journey gets murky for us. We have messed around with FreeNAS/TrueNAS, but nothing to this extent. From this documentation I see a 9+2+1 vdev recommendation:

I don't see anything about cache or however TrueNAS can speed up reads and writes. I don't expect to have 10Gbps of throughput, but I also can't function if this device can only transfer at 50MB/sec or something stupid like that. Can I throw in a couple of SAS/SATA SSD's and use as cache? Again, I don't know the technical term for the cache in TrueNAS, but we want to implement whatever can increase throughput.

I was thinking about doing the following for the VDEV's

22 x 12TB Dell nearline SAS Drives
VDEV 1 = 8 data storage disks, 2 parity disks and 1 spare = ~87TB
VDEV 2 = 8 data storage disks, 2 parity disks and 1 spare = ~87TB
Four (4) Bays remain and could be used for SSD caching, spare SSD's whatever

Any thoughts on this are appreciated!

Thanks!
