Howdy all,

I have a Promise EX16350 controller which seems to be working fine, bios is seeing all the drives. But I'm guessing it's driver is not part of the stock build like the highpoints. Is it just a matter of loaded its FreeBSD driver or is it not a known working card for FN? I'm a FreeBSD newb so any direction is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Driver issue

I have the SupeTrak EX8350 and have tried a couple of different things to get it to work but no luck. I installed ubuntu server 12.04 and it recognized the card with no hassle so that means it can work in a Linux environment. So it she be able to work with freenas. If anybody knows how to get this working please chime in.

Linux and Unix are not the same, very different. UNIX is like the great-great-great-great grandfather of Linux. Just because it works on Linux doesn't mean it works on Unix (FreeNAS/FreeBSD).

You can try a FreeBSD 8.2/8.3 boot CD/DVD and if it works with that, THEN it's possible to make it work with FreeNAS.

Don't mess with trying to find a driver, just find a FreeBSD 8.2 or 8.3 live boot CD or DVD, boot up FreeBSD, and see if your controller works. Drivers don't work the same on FreeBSD as Linux. If you can get it to work with one of those specific versions of FreeBSD, then we can figure out the next step.

Any luck with the Promise controller NAScake? I have the same controller laying around and I figured that it would be a great SATA port provider for FreeNAS. :)

LE: After looking at the hardware release notes for FreeBSD 8.3 I saw the following:
Code:
The mvs(4) driver supports the following controllers:

Gen-I (SATA 1.5Gbps):
•88SX5040
•88SX5041
•88SX5080
•88SX5081
Gen-II (SATA 3Gbps, NCQ, PMP):
•88SX6040
•88SX6041 (including Adaptec 1420SA)
•88SX6080
•88SX6081

Gen-IIe (SATA 3Gbps, NCQ, PMP with FBS):
•88SX6042
•88SX7042 (including Adaptec 1430SA)
•88F5182 SoC
•88F6281 SoC
•MV78100 SoC

Promise SuperTrak EX16350 has two Marvell chips branded: 88SX6081.
From my past experience with an Adaptec 1430SA (Marvell 88SX7042) that board works with FreeNAS/FreeBSD versions since version 8.0. The disks are visible if only left unconfigured (no RAID)/JBOD. I will try and come back with an update later on.

It seems that with no hdds connected to it it's not being detected by FreeBSD/FreeNAS:

Card not being detected, driver not loaded. Probably PCI_ID has to be added to sources so that the OS will identify the card and properly load the module ...
