Persistent nsmb.conf across OS updates

I have been using FreeNAS for a couple years now. My usage has been expanded a lot. I have a few unusual setup like mounting SMB shares from another machine. In order to do so, I have modified/added the following files to the system:
  • /conf/base/etc/fstab
  • /conf/base/etc/nsmb.conf
  • /conf/base/etc/newsystemlog.conf.d/customlogs.conf
It works fine as the above files are automatic copied to the /etc directory on each reboot. I added the file customlogs.conf for log management of logs generated by my modifications. After an OS update, FreeNAS 11.3-U1, the file customlogs.conf was intact but the other 2 files are reverted to default. Hence the SMB shares failed to mount after update. I have to modify them again afterwards.

Am I doing it wrong? Is there an official way to mount SMB shares not only persistent across reboot but across updates as well?
