Hi, I am new to NAS and need some advice for my first build, it will be used to store backups at the office. Users will save everything on a server with 2x1TB (soft raid1) and the backups will be stored on the FreeNAS.

I was planning to use an HP NL40 server but since it uses non standard components (MB, PSU) I've decided to replace it with a custom build that handles easier to find parts.

Case: LIAN LI PC-Q08B
MB: Intel S1200kp----/Could the Supermicro Atom \
CPU: Pentium G630T--\boards be a better solution?/
RAM: 8GB DDR3 ECC
HDD: 4x WD RE4 1TB RAIDZ2 (are this disks *really* reliable? or should I use RED/Black Caviar)
RAID: Not sure if I need it
PSU: Antec EA-500
USB: Patriot Rage XT 8gb

The unit will be on standby most of the time and will WOL when need it.

I don't know how well FreeNAS WOLs. You might want to read up on it before you attempt to rely on it. I guess it's weighing energy costs versus drive spinups.
You wouldn't need a RAID card if your only doing 2 hdds.
