Hello,
im trying to build/buy a server to run free nas for light streaming but mainly storage,

without the hard drives i would like to spend less than 600 if so (thats why im thinking a old server)

any idea what old server to buy or should i spend more money and build a newer one that i know will use less power, im going to have about 24tb of storage.

any idea build or buy?

what would you do

Thank you everyone
Dave

Woah, I read that wrong. I thought you were looking for a server + 24TB usable space for under $600. Whew.

What danb35 said. They go on sale on Newegg quite frequently. Put an alert on Slickdeals and wait for it to pop up.

Hello,
Thank you all, from what i can see the ts140 does not have much physical space for hard drives, this may be a noob question, but where do i put all the hard drives,
Thanks again everyone

How many drives do you need? IIRC, the TS140 holds 4, while there's said to be a bracket available for the T20 that will allow for 6. If you need more than that, the TS440 can in some versions take up to 8.

Yep, without drives your looking at the 5500 or 5600 series xeons. Mr. Rackables has a couple supermicro ones but you would have to swap out the raid cards (and sell them) for some SAS2008 HBA's.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2U-Supermic...8GB-HW-Raid-/151928876614?hash=item235faaae46 comes with 48GB of ram. Sell the raid card for 35 bucks or contact them and see if they will swap it out for a SAS2008 controller for a few bucks more. If not I would say to make an offer around 415 or 425 and see if they will bite. Controller will only be about another 100 on Ebay

So if you get the server at 450 offer plus 50 shipping and 99 for the card shipped free you will fall just under the 600 mark but have 48GB of ram and dual 800watt PSU's. With enough horsepower to handle a few jails and VM's among other things.

Hell, if you are going to spend $400 on a rack mount then get the 846 with SAS2 backplane for $450. CertifiedServers had them but looks like they do not right now.
