Hi,

So I'm looking to get a start on building my first FreeNAS NAS. I have been looking through some local ads and saw that I can buy a used HP dl360 g4 (part number: 354572-371) for $90AUD.

Now my usage for the NAS will mainly be:
  • RAW image files
  • Videos (ie, movies)
  • Old documents
  • And system backups
So I was wondering how suitable this server will be for my needs? I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money thats why I thought this maybe a good buy.

Thanks,

G4 is really old. P4 era if I recall correctly. A little too old. I'd avoid lga775 and things with a front side bus. Nehalem is about as old as I'd go. Sandy bridge is of course better.

Ok thanks for the advice, I just check it was released in 2005, which is practically ancient.

I forgot to mention in my post as well this is just for personal use, not sure if that would make a difference to your response.

I would look for a DL360 G6....the G6 series can be found for cheap, and parts are plentiful

Also depending on your storage needs, something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Proliant...074-005-SAS-/271968668526?hash=item3f52988b6e or a supermicro http://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro-...Raid-Add-HD-/231668307074?hash=item35f081d482 are great too, the supermicro would probably be preferred as FreeNAS may or may not play nicely with HP's hardware;where as supermicro is pretty proven whether its x7-x10 series (dont go X7 though :p )

I have actually decided to move away from the whole server thing, and since I live in Australia supermicro don't actually sell down here.

I was thinking of just building one now, this is what I was thinking, I understand the risks of not going for ecc as well but in aus it is very difficult and expensive to find a motherboard that supports it.

MOBO: Asus H97I-PLUS $125
CPU: Intel Pentium G3420 $82
RAM: Corsair ValueSelect CMV8GX3M2A1600C11 8GB Kit $78
Case: Coolermaster Elite 130 $58
PSU: EVGA 500B (100-B1-0500-KR) 500Watt 80Plus Bronze Power Supply Unit $72
HDD: Seagate 3.5" NAS 2TB 5900RPM $125

You should look into the dell T20. I've seen some Australian sites with it listed for $560. It comes with 4GB ECC, and so you'd need to budget for an additional 4GB. You should also have a minimum of two hard drives for FreeNAS.

I can totally understand wanting to avoid spending a lot of money, but I'd almost rather have no FreeNAS than one without ECC and have consumer grade hardware possibly corrupting your data. That is of course unless what you are planning to host on there isn't really that important, then no big deal. I feel lucky having so much hardware available on ebay, since some of you don't. That sucks.

Yer I did a bit of research on getting a server grade board and ECC, but the truth is that spending an extra 300-400 to get ECC just isn't really worth it and when you factor in the data that ill be keeping on there, isn't that important. If this changes in the future ill look at doing some upgrades. I'm also looking for the experience in build the system.
