I'm pricing out a new high capacity (48-64TB), high performance (10gb Network) storage server and want some drive recommendations. I'm considering the following two configs and price will probably be what determines which I go with:

6 x 6TB RAIDz2 vdev (x2) - 48TB usable
6 x 8TB RAIDz2 vdev (x2) - 64TB usable
*SSDs will be used for cache/log

The overwhelming opinion from what I'm readying is WD Reds are the way to go though I've heard there are some vibration/noise issues with the 8TB versions. Can anyone comment on this?

Outside of the WD Red line of drives, what other line is comparable that would work well in this setup?

From what I know about the RED drives, The vibration and noise issues are really variable depending on the environment. As long as everything is nice and sturdy, some anti-vibration mounts where needed, everything should be fine.

However, if you're looking for another solution, definitely look into some Helium (He8) drives. I've heard HGST has some reputable reviews with their 8TB He8, but I haven't used them personally. I can only assume a sealed drive would have the absolute minimal noise/vibration problems possible.

I'm partial to HGST; had good luck with their 7K4000 (now 7K6000) and DeskStar NAS lines:

The WDC Gold line looks good, too. They've replaced the old RE/RE4 enterprise drives:

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been looking at the WD Gold line but man they are expensive. So are the Helium drives. Don't think I'll able to afford more than $300 per drive considering how many I'll need to purchase.

I understand! In that case, the HGST DeskStar NAS line is only a little more expensive than WD Reds. They really perform, too - especially the newer models with the larger cache.

Thanks. You're right those look like a very solid option. I just have to decide if I want to deal with the cons of using 7200RPM drives (more noise and heat). Hmmmm...decisions decisions.
