First Thank You to CyberJock and the others for the hardware guides and how-to's.

I have a small ITX FreeNAS with a 2 x 1TB mirrors (4 drives). The system runs on an i3 and 8GB of ECC supported by the S1200KP.

I am using it to hold all of my junk and clear everything but applications from my PC's. What I also would like to do is have data (<300mb) from my work server backed up over VPN once a month to supplement the onsite weekly external hard backups. I did some searching but could not find much info. I did find a lot on backing up the NAS but not much on backing up to the NAS. I have an openVPN going both ways and I can connect from home to work or work to home and access the networks. Is it as simple as setting up a dataset & share to save to or is there a better way to do this?

There are many options out there. What OS is on the "work server"?

The system runs on Windows 7 Pro. It has 2 SQL databases running on it with associated files.

Then yes, you can backup to a CIFS share.
